Evaluation of the Developed Assistance Method for Improving Lane Change Maneuver by using Highly Realistic Driving Simulator

The driver assistance system for improving lane change maneuver at expressway has been developed in our laboratory for inexperienced drivers to enhance their driving skill and awareness for safe driving. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the utility of this developed assistance system by employing driving simulator which enables us to emulate actual driving circumstance. The lane change proficiency of educated group was compared with that of free-driving group which was not educated by any methods in case of running at two-lane expressway at relative velocities (30km/h) of cruising lane and overtaking lane. It is found by the experiment that all of the drivers in educated group can acquire important points of lane change behaviour, and the lane-change behaviour can be much improved by the proposed system, and the merits are described quantitatively in this paper.
