Making Intelligent Mobility a Reality
Congestion in certain parts of Europe is reaching a point where it is limiting the capacity of the population to travel freely. In the United Kingdom (UK) alone there are currently 143 cars per mile of road and congestion costs the UK around £12 billion annually. This presentation will look at how increasing capacity in the road network is not simply a matter of building more roads. Vehicles and roads must become more intelligent, using the existing space more efficiently, improving safety and reducing congestion. The presentation will argue that, at a time when it is desperately needed the effects of this would be felt in all aspects of the economy with businesses becoming more competitive as transport and logistics costs are reduced; journey times becoming more predictable and the associated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions decreasing as less fuel is consumed. The presentation will argue that the technologies that will enable this revolution already largely exist but it is the integration of intelligent transport systems and services into everyday use which we must now accelerate. The plans of the Automotive Council for achieving this in the UK are outlined.
