Impacts of a Green Driving Application in City Buses
The impacts of a green driving application were assessed in city bus traffic as part of the TeleFOT project. Specifically, the purpose of the study was to assess the impacts on fuel consumption, speeding and passenger comfort. The test subjects were city bus drivers working for the Nobina transport operator on the frequently operated Jokeri route in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The main result of the study shows that use of a green driving application significantly reduces fuel consumption and speeding. New users of the system drove more economically than those who had used it longer. Fuel saving by new users in peak traffic was 2.7 l/100 km for the whole route and as much as 5.4 l/100 km for one section. In addition to savings on fuel, the application encouraged driving within the speed limit. The main conclusion is therefore that use of a green driving application is beneficial even after years of use for reducing both fuel consumption and speeding. The authors recommend that drivers be regularly encouraged to use the system and that green driving be included in driver training.
