Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River: Acoustical Monitoring 2010

During the summer of 2010 (September – October 2010), the Volpe Center collected baseline acoustical data at Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River (RIGR) at three sites deployed for approximately 30 days each. The baseline data collected during this period will help park managers and planners estimate the effects of future noise impacts and will help to inform future park planning objectives such as creating soundscape management plans, as well as the development of an Air Tour Management Plan (ATMP), which provides for the regulation of commercial air tours. The sound sources of concern at Big Bend (BIBE) include developments near park boundaries, air tours, commercial and private aircraft activities, and requests for special use permits for noisy activities. This document summarizes the results of the noise measurement study.
