The relation between speed and road safety : the development of road safety on 50 and 80 km/h roads compared with the development on 30 and 60 km/h roads.
De relatie tussen snelheidslimiet en verkeersveiligheid : onwikkeling van de verkeersonveiligheid op 50- en 80km/uur-wegen vergeleken met die op 30- en 60km/uur-wegen.
Since the implementation of the Start-up Programme Sustainable Safety from 1998 onward, the speed limit on a considerable length of urban access roads in the Netherlands has been changed from 50 km/h into 30 km/h. This involved more or less intensive infrastructural adaptations. The speed limit on part of the rural access roads was also lowered from 80 km/h to 60 km/h. This increased the total road length of 30 and 60 km/h roads and reduced the total road length of 50 and 80 km/h roads. If we want to understand the road safety development on roads with a certain speed limit, we must therefore take account of these changes in total road length.
