GeoANAS: An Information Hub and a Reusable Service
Google Earth Enterprise (GEE) is being widely adopted by government agencies, infrastructure operators, private and public companies because it is a cost effective, readily deployable, user friendly, de-facto standard solution to represent geospatial information. Experience shows that standard solutions do not necessarily match business requirements, especially when a geographical information system (GIS) is to be used to manage and operate a widespread infrastructure such as the National road network. Data and information must be augmented in order to guarantee the correct level of usability by road management specialists. Orthography must be enhanced to provide an adequate quality of imagery. Vector data must be accurately selected and fused into the virtual globe. Terrain and slow changing assets data must be included in the virtual globe in order to fully obtain the expected benefits from the intuitive Google Earth client search or browser like Google Maps capabilities. A carefully fused virtual globe becomes a reusable service for a number of applications in the typical intelligent transportation (IT) landscape of an infrastructure operator. This document describes the GeoANAS project, an actual case of the implementation of GEE at ANAS (Italian National Road Agency) as a practical support tool for core business processes such as traffic and right-of-way asset management.
