Geology and Properties of Earth Materials 2013

This issue contains 16 papers regarding geology and properties of earth materials. The papers are organized in five parts. The first part is concerned with geological hazard mitigation, geotechnical asset management and innovation. Individual papers address the engineering behavior of hexagonal wire mesh gabion panels; corridor management as a means to elevate the understanding of geotechnical impacts of system performance; and overcoming an environmental surprise with fast-track technology. The second part is concerned with the characterization of unsaturated soil properties. Papers in this section address: moisture-dependent changes in the stiffness of unbound aggregate base materials; the influence of contact angle on soil-water characteristic curve; and integrating a national database of subgrade soil-water characteristic curves and soil index properties with the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide. Papers in the third part are concerned with the physicochemical effects on geomaterials. Specific topics include: temperature effects on the shear strength of recycled asphalt shingles; thermally induced water flux in soils; leaching behavior from highway structural fills amended with high-carbon fly ash; and leaching from recycled concrete aggregate. The fourth part addresses seasonal and climate effects on transportation infrastructure. Specific topics include: the phase composition curve of frozen soils; flexible pavement performance and service life; and spring weight restriction limits on low-volume roads in Manitoba, Canada. The fifth part is concerned with safety and road management of low-volume roads. Individual papers address highway alignment consistency; ensuring sustainability of Otta seal; and Otta seal surfacing.
