High-strength hitch

The new self-anchored suspension East Span on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is the object of lessons learned for its designers, contractors and owner. A report is released addressing the failure of a few dozen relatively ordinary high-strength steel rods, which are having major repercussions for the bridge's completion. Reasons for the failure are detailed here, with inappropriate use of a single steel specification for 17 different solutions at the heart of it, as well as plans for a solution.
