WAVE-EXCITED MAIN HULL VIBRATION IN LARGE TANKERS AND BULK CARRIERS

This paper discusses a possible explanation of wave-excited vibration in large bulk carriers and tankers. The use of strip-theory for calculating wave-excitation forces and hydrodynamic damping is discussed, and an approximate method of estimating vibration deflections and amidships stresses in irregular waves is given. It is shown that theoretical calculations for 200,000 dwt tanker compare reasonably well with limited full-scale experiment data. In the conclusions it is suggested that certain details of the methods used in the paper to explain the phenomena of wave-excited vibration need further study, namely the calculation of the exciting force distribution along the ship's hull and the calculation of the damping distribution.
