Hybrid Approach for Clustering Vehicle Classification Data to Support Regional Implementation of the MEPDG (Student Presentation)

The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) is the current state-of-practice meant to replace the AASHTO regression equation methodology. It has three hierarchical levels of design inputs for vehicle classification data: Level 1 - presence of permanent classification equipment at site; Level 2 - short-term classification counts expanded using Level 1 data, and; Level 3 - lack of classification data and not geographically proximate to higher level sites. The objectives of this project were: design a hybrid approach for grouping vehicle classification data; apply the approach to the Canadian Prairie Region to develop a regional set of truck traffic classification groups (TTCGs), and; outline the lessons learned in benefits and limitations of developing regional default data groups.
