The impact of regional jets in the airline market in the USA

O impacto dos jatos regionais no mercado de transporte aéreo norte-americano

This article is based on a paper entitled “Technological Innovation in the Airline Industry: The impact of Regional Jets” written by Jan K. Brueckner and Vivek Pai, and aims to analyze the impact caused by Regional Jets (RJs) in the North American market, which started and got stronger from the 90s. The hypothesis that RJs would have opened new point to point (PP) routes that were previously uneconomical is raised, but data gathered from four major airlines in the North American market contradicts this theory. Last, there’s a discussion about possible negative impacts that the use of regional jets can be causing.
