Airport infrastructure as regional air traffic developer in Brazil
Infraestrutura aeroportuária e o desenvolvimento do tráfego aéreo regional no Brasil
This study focuses an empirical analysis of the infrastructure influence over regional passenger air traffic, considering as the unit of analysis selected airport passenger traffic. The role of the infrastructure as an entry barrier is also discussed, given that high entry costs can limit the development of new routes. 50 airports in Brazil were randomly selected and evaluated by its passenger movement (as a dependent variable) and some measures of airport infrastructure, control variables are also used such as city population and per capita GDP. It was found that infrastructure has a significant impact over passenger traffic, where the most important infrastructure items appear to be, collectively, runway quality, apron area and passenger terminal size.
