Reliability of the South-West Sydney transport corridor
Successive governments in NSW are creating high growth residential areas in South Western Sydney. Thus reliability in terms of travel time variability of the South-West Sydney Transport Corridor, the link between these growth areas and the Sydney CBD, has become a major concern for commuters, operators, transport planners and authorities. This study has focused on investigation into the travel time variability of this transport corridor, comparing private transport on M5-Motorway and public transport on East Hills Railway Line between Liverpool and Sydney Airport from the commuters’ point of view. A statistical analysis of collected travel time data was undertaken to establish and compare travel time variability and confidence levels. Travel times of private and public transport modes vary notably during peak and off-peak periods. Public transport outperforms private transport during peak periods however private transport performs exceptionally well during off-peak periods and for shorter trips. These results were utilised to form suggestions about additional traffic management measures that could be applied to potentially improve the reliability of the corridor.
