Application of a centrality measure proposal to evaluate the network of a Brazilian airline

Aplicação de uma proposta de medida de centralidade para avaliação de malha aérea de uma empresa do setor de transporte aéreo brasileiro

As the air transport market grows, optimized sources, increased safety standards, and air passenger level of services (network efficiency parameters) became imperative. Owing to this scenario, airlines have studied their routes, demands and strategies in order to establish hub airports. This article intended to analyze the network of a Brazilian small size airline using a method that isolates the low-degree vertices to find the central nodes most important to the company. To the network centrality measure, the authors use two approaches. The first one identifies the existence of a connection among the vertices of the network, not taking into account the number of direct flights, but only whether or not there is a connection. The data related to the total number of direct flights are used in the second approach, which, in theoretical terms is defined as a multi-edges graph. The data used showed the reality of the airline network available during a week in July, 2010. The findings can be useful to the company in order to calculate their risks in terms of overcrowding and other incidents in the airports. The results can also be helpful to optimizations in the routes to increase efficiency and the competitiveness of the airline studied.
