Rethinking railroad safety and efficiency
This article describes the design of a Virtual Centralized Traffic Control (VCTC) system for Egyptian National Railways that integrates proven traffic control and traffic management with the expanded functionality of Positive Train Control (PTC). VCTC expands traditional CTC with its use of the locomotive as a mobile node to continually update train position and speed data. The author details the project's design objectives for each of the traffic control, traffic management and safety enforcement components.
