THYRISTOR CONTROL OF VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES

Surveys the methods available today for the thyristor control of variable speed drives. Thyristor parameters of interest and the most widely used thyristor convertor connexions are first discussed and thereafter the basic speed control systems for d.c. and a.c. motors are presented. Brief comments are given on control characteristics power ratings and possible applications. Some examples of thyristor controlled drives within industry and transportation are then mentioned and, finally, possible applications for the propulsion of ships and machinery on board ships are described.
