Engineering a better road: Use of two-way prestressed, precast concrete pavement for rapid rehabilitation
For many years, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has rehabilitated concrete pavement using rapid-strength concrete. However, the underperformance of this repair method has led Caltrans to investigate alternative techniques. This paper describes a recent project in which two-way pretensioned precast concrete pavement was used to rehabilitate a highway in the San Francisco Bay Area. A combination of jointed precast, pretensioned concrete pavement and precast, posttensioned concrete pavement was used. This project was unique compared to other precast concrete projects in the United States in the use of two-way prestressing (longitudinal and transverse directions), elimination of blockout pockets through the use of end stressing, reduction in the number of posttensioning ducts, and the casting and deployment of 18-36 ft-long panels. The rehabilitation project is nearing completion and will be monitored periodically through instrumentation and nondestructive testing.
