Top Ten Most Severe Marine Casualties

This article describes the procedure for determining marine casualty severity and then describes the ten most severe incidents from 2006-2010. From 2006 on, the U.S. Coast Guard investigated over 50,000 incidents involving oil discharges, hazardous materials spills and marine casualties. The top ten incidents, including severity points, were as follows: 1. Explosion, Fire, and Sinking of Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU) Deepwater Horizon with Multiple Loss of Life and Major Oil Spill, April 20, 2010 (39.0 points); 2. Sinking of the CFV Katmai with Multiple Loss of Life, October 21, 2008 (25.0 points); 3. Explosion, Fire, and Sinking of the Athena 106 Barge with Multiple Loss of Life, Oct. 12, 2006 (24.0 points); 4. Sinking of the CFV Lady Mary with Multiple Loss of Life, March 24, 2009 (20.0 points); 5. Sinking of the CFV Alaska Ranger with Multiple Loss of Life, March 23, 2008 (19.0 points); 6. Sinking of the CFV Lady of Grace with Multiple Loss of Life, January 26, 2007 (15.5 points); 7. Allision with the UTV Little Man II and Sinking of the PC FL8258MN with Multiple Loss of Life, April 12, 2009 (15.0 points); 8. Sinking of the CFV Ash with Multiple Loss of Life, December 16, 2006 (14.0 points); 9. Sinking of UTV Valour with Multiple Loss of Life, January 17, 2006 (14.0 points); and 10. M/V Seacor Madison Collision with Ghanaian Canoe with Multiple Loss of Life, July 5, 2007 (13.0 points).
