Toward overtrust-free advanced driver assistance systems
To establish a socially acceptable advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), it is vital to prevent driver overtrust in the system. In this paper, the author proposes a trust model in which overtrust can be clearly defined, and three types of overtrust are found to exist based on the model. Specifically examined is human overtrust in an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system and the author conducted an experiment on a medium-fidelity driving simulator. In it, two of the three types of overtrust are observed. First, some drivers relied on the ACC system beyond its limit of decelerating capacity and, second, a driver relied on the ACC system by expecting that it could decelerate against a stopped vehicle. The paper discusses possible ways for prevention of human overtrust in ADAS.
