Impact Evaluation of a Public Bicycle Share Program on Cycling: A Case Example of BIXI in Montreal, Quebec
A public bicycle share program called BIXI (BIcycle-taXI) was introduced in Montreal, Quebec, in 2009. This article examines the relationship between residential exposure to BIXI and the likelihood of cycling in Montreal, both as part of the BIXI program and otherwise, in the first two years of implementation. Data was collected by way of telephone surveys taken at different points during the two-year period, for people exposed to BIXI and those not. Controlling for weather, environment, and other variable factors, the authors found that a bicycle share program can lead to a higher amount of cycling for those in areas where bicycles are available.
