THE PAPER DESCRIBES EMBANKMENT COMPACTION EXPERIMENTS TO DETERMINE (1) THE OUTPUT OF TWO TYPES OF ROAD ROLLERS COMMONLY AVAILABLE, THE SMOOTH WHEELED ROLLER AND THE TRACTOR MOUNTED (T. M. ) ROLLER; (2) THE NUMBER OF PASSES OF THE ROLLER REQUIRED IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE SPECIFIED DENSITY; (3) THE MANPOWER REQUIRED TO OPERATE THE ROLLER; AND (4) A PROCEDURE FOR BORROWING SOIL WITH OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT BY MECHANICAL MEANS.
