Methodology for risk analysis in railway tunnels using Monte Carlo simulation

This paper describes a process of quantitative risk analysis to determine the safety of railroad tunnels. It uses Monte Carlo simulation and event tree procedures for safety analysis, to ascertain the possible consequences incurred by unexpected or undesirable events. The unanticipated events - such as derailments, fires, and collisions - can pose safety and security concerns. It is useful to analyze their probability of occurrence beforehand, so tunnel construction efforts and configurations can be appropriately informed regarding possible safety issues.
