'Thinning up' concrete overlays for pavement preservation
Concrete overlays have evolved over time in terms of becoming thinner and used increasingly over asphalt, as opposed to concrete, in earlier days. They now account for about 10-15% of the square yards of concrete placed on an annual basis. Agencies are now looking to improve functional condition and extend pavement service life, with a view to preservation, not major structural benefit. Research, technology transfer and implementation all play major roles in the quest for thinner concrete overlays.
