Intersection Crash Prevention System by Automatic Vehicle Guidance

This paper introduces a new systematic approach for intersection crash prevention by automatic intersection guidance based on real-time vehicle data collected using infrastructure-based sensor technologies. In this paper, the authors review driverless car technologies, autonomous intersection management, and related sensing technologies. The authors then suggest the requirements and concepts of an intersection crash prevention system using automatic vehicle guidance. For the system, the authors developed an algorithm using infrastructure-based vehicle- location data and intersection distance related to time to collision. Using a VISSIM simulator, a simulation is also presented by changing the scenario parameters such as inflow volume and detection line from infrastructure-based sensors. Under this new traffic system application, the concept and algorithm produce a very efficient solution to the area of intersection guidance.
