CRACK OPENING DISPLACEMENT INFERRED FROM PLASTICITY PHENOMENA
The report describes a method of inferring crack opening displacement from the plastic component of strain of a load/displacement test record. The results have been obtained using Charpy-sized specimens containing fatigue cracks or machined slits with crack length to specimen width ( a/W ) ratios between 0.2 and 0.5 respectively. Comparison of the inferred values of C.O.D. with actual C.O.D. measurements determined optically shows extremely good agreement. Thus, the proposed method of inferring C.O.D. enables measurements to be readily obtained without the need of intricate measuring apparatus positioned at the crack tip.
