The Influence of the Binder Viscosity on the Laboratory Short Term Aging
The plant mixing temperature and the field work condition of Warm Binders are not generally the same as those adopted with traditional and modified binders. This difference makes the Rolling Thin Film Oven Test (RTFOT) procedure and temperature (163 °C) potentially not representative of the real effective aging. Consequently the binder durability evaluation and the performance prediction, introduced by EN 12591 and estimated after RTFOT, could result in an inappropriate short term aging procedure. The main purpose of this research is the evaluation of a new RTFOT procedure based on binder viscosity influence, that justifies the appropriate laboratory conditions to simulate the effective short term aging during mixing and compaction.
