Cell-ID Based Route Estimation Method for Long Term Travel Behavior Survey
For an investigation of a multimodal passenger trip which includes driving a vehicle and riding a train, floating phone technology is developed. In the early days, the base station location of cellular phones was used instead of the cellular phone location. Other technology uses few or several base station locations and radio strength from each base station, and estimates a cellular phone location by using triangulation principle, but accuracy is not so good. In recent years, GPS positioning technology has been used, but GPS needs large electric power consumption, and cellular phone use is shifting from traditional type to smartphones. Smartphones have weak points, for example, short uptime. Under these conditions, long term travel behavior surveying is not easy. In addition, GPS has high accuracy, so even if the survey is done with anonymous recording, home and office locations can be estimated. That is undesirable to protect privacy. In this paper, a Cell-ID based route estimation method is proposed. This method needs low electric power consumption, and only collects location data when it is moving. Using this method, a long term travel behavior survey method is proposed and experimental results are explained with actual recording data.
