For the Love of Parking
This article discusses the renovation of the City Ramp garage in Spokane, Washington, possibly the oldest continually-operating garage in the United States. The six-story garage was built in 1928 and, faced with threat of demolition in 2005 after being put up for sale by its retiring owner, it was rescued by two local men who had a personal connection with and love for the structure. The two purchased the garage, setting out to restore it to its 1928 condition and enlisting the help of community members at all stages of the renovation. The building is now listed on local, state and national registries of historic places is a popular destination for city residents.
