Why LED Roadway Signs Make Sense
The implementation of light emitting diode (LED) traffic signals has resulted in greatly increased fixture life along with a reduction in energy consumption. LED technology improvements in the past 10 years now make the bulbs candidates for replacing traditional high-intensity-discharge (HID) technology in roadway signs as well. These new advancements can provide users with the same benefits they have received from the conversion of traffic signals. Typical roadway signs are expensive to operate and require significant maintenance. LEDs can resolve these issues by reducing maintenance and operating costs by nearly 75 percent. They are easily installed, provide superior lighting quality, and are virtually maintenance free. Further, LM-79 and LM-80 reports issued by the manufacturer assure their performance, thus reducing risk in the procurement process by providing a benchmark among different manufacturers.
