THE TRANSPORTATION OF SMALL SHIPMENTS BY REGULATED CARRIERS, SELECTED YEARS: 1950-1971

One of the more difficult problems of the transportation industry has been the transportation of small shipments. To clarify the problem the Interstate Commerce Commission issued two reports in 1967--the Small Shipments Problem and the Role of Regulated Motor Carriers in the Handling of Small Shipments. Contained with the latter report were three tables profiling the growth of the known small shipments market in terms of revenues, shipments, and tons for the years 1950-1964. The series has been sustained in periodic issues of Transport Economics. In contrast to previous issues, this issue refines the statistical series itself, and indicates the more significant changes that have occurred since 1964. Because these statistics are somewhat limited in their scope and contain a number of deficiences, care must be exercised in comparing them with other series of transportation statistics. This release, issued as information, has not been adopted by ICC.
