LONG-TERM TRENDS IN NORTH AMERICAN DIESEL POWER
New standard designs of diesel-electric locomotive are still being purchased in large numbers by the North American railways, but customers are more interested in reliability and lower maintenance cost than in higher unit horsepowers. Manufacturers are working at full production capacity, but H.G. McClean points out that, more than ever before, new orders are the outcome of a penetrating application analysis taking into account locomotive size, cost, utilization, and latterly some aspects of pollution.
