KEISEI TRAINS SERVE NEW NARITA AIRPORT LINK

Opening of the new Tokyo International Airport at Narita, due to take place this spring, will bring a heavy demand for transport to and from the city centre. Although an extension of the JNR Shinkansen high speed network is planned within the next four years, immediate needs will be met by a 7.3 km branch of the standard-gauge Keisei Electric Railway, recently completed and due to open at the same time as the airport. To operate the line, KER placed orders with Tokyo Car Manufacturing Company, Limited, Tokyo, for five 6-car electric trains specially designed for airport service. Known as the AE (Airport Express) type, these units have been delivered well in advance to allow ample time for crew training and service testing before the opening date.
