ACI STARTS TO EARN ITS KEEP
After five years of cautious experiment, the first major automatic wagon identification (ACI) scheme involving more than 100 scanners is being installed to monitor inter-system wagon movements in the Chicago area. The long delay in labelling the North American rolling stock fleet discouraged early investment in scanners, but the number in use more than doubled in 1972 to 300 by the year's end.
