SOLID TRACKBED EXPERIENCE ON A CONCRETE ARCH UNDERBRIDGE
Underbridges, which already have structural support in the form of concrete or steel beams, are a natural choice for solid trackbed construction. In addition to elimination of the ballast layer, the height of the track is reduced, possibly saving valuable inches at a bridge where headroom is restricted. Italian State Railways has been experimenting with such a trackbed, in which the rail clips are fixed to blocks grouted directly into holes in the bridge deck.
