USING COMPUTERS TO STEAL--LATEST TWIST IN CRIME

The computer--in the hands of skilled operators bent on theft, fraud or sabotage--has become a major crime problem for business and government. In fact, experts believe that illegal use of computers now is the fastest-growing type of white-collar crime. Computer-related crime is difficult to detect. And it is more profitable, less dangerous and easier to commit than many other kinds of criminal activity. Access to some computers can be gained by means as simple as a home pushbutton telephone. The range of crimes made possible by computers runs from simple embezzlement to destruction of official information stored on data banks. Computer criminals have stolen trade secrets, valuable equipment and millions of dollars from banks, private companies and government agencies. And some businesses have utilized computers to disguise their own fraudulent practices.
