USE AND WELDING OF METALS FOR LOW TEMPERATURES. APPLICATION TO EQUIPMENT FOR LIQUEFACTION OF METHANE
The safety of equipment functioning at low temperatures depends largely on the materials employed in its manufacture. It is necessary for the user, the design office and the manufacturer to be informed of the limits to which the uses of various metals can be put as a function of operational temperature. The fragility of metals subjected to low temperatures together with the consequences arriving therefrom are now a well known phenomenon. This fragility is a result of numerous factors such as chemical composition, the impurity content and structural state. A general examination of metals likely to be used under cold conditions as well as welding conditions for these metals is made by the author.
