HOW TO TOTE 600 TONS

This article describes Westinghouse Electric Company's Schnabel Cars. These cars are multi-axle cars using span bolsters to transport large, heavy loads. Each car is constructed in two halves, which separate to permit the load to be mounted between the halves. The cars are used for transporting turbine generators to electric power plants, since clearance restrictions will not permit transporting of such loads on flat cars, not even depressed-center flat cars. Car WEC 200 has 12 axles and a 500,000 pound load capacity, and was built for transporting transformers, which it can carry as low as 6 inches above the rails. Car WECX 201 has 14 axles and a 740,000 pound load capacity. Car WECX 101 has 20 axles and a 1,000,000 pound load capacity. Car WECX 202 is a near duplicate of WECX 101. Car WECX 102 has 22 axles and a 1,200,000 pound load capacity. Cars 101, 202, and 102 all have offset pivot trusses that support the loads. The truss is pivoted at one point on a span bolster, but its weight is carried at another point at the center of the span bolster by a plate and rollers arrangement. The cars have diesel driven power load shifting apparatus to enable the load to be shifted to get by tight clearances. The cars have separate braking systems at each end, and provision for carrying the train line by the load. Car 102 was used to ease a gross weight of 1,376,000 pounds over a branch line containing 56 pound rail laid in the 1880's.
