Analysis of Ground Loosening Behaviour in Expansion of Underground Cavities: Laboratory Experiments in Sandy Soil

Detailed quantitative investigation on variation of mechanical properties of loosed ground due to presence of underground cavities was examined in this research. Underground cavity was simulated in triaxial test by introducing a water soluble material into soil specimen and the effect of ground loosening was observed by infiltration and drainage. Influence of ground loosening on deformation characteristics, stress-strain relationship and strength parameters of soil was computed and further parameters which affects the propagation of ground loosening phenomena was analyzed. Result shows that the ground loosening phenomena caused by underground cavities have significantly affected on deformation characteristics and stress-strain relationship of ground by weakening the ground.
