Mechanical Characteristics of Composite Geomaterial Mixed with Lightweight Granular Material
Among the lightweight methods or the countermeasures for soft ground is the lightweight soil method. The lightweight geomaterial mixed with EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) beads can be used in this method, which leads to the reutilization of the construction generated soil as this is used as the base material. However, the beads have to have high compressibility; therefore, this geomaterial shows the different mechanical characteristics from the others which are generally used as base materials. Though some studies on its characteristics have already been conducted in many research institutes, few have made research on its applicability, design basis and most suitable composition to earth structures. In this study, as a part of our studies to make clear the design parameter and applicability of Lightweight Geomaterial Mixed with EPS Beads (LWGME) to subgrade, conducts the unconfined compression test, triaxial compression test, cyclic triaxial test, and box shear test to find out the mechanical characteristics of LWGME.
