MEASUREMENT OF VIBRATION AS A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
The technique makes use of the fact that all rotating machines vibrate to some degree or other. Two parameters of vibration are normally used for diagnostic work: the amplitude (i.e. displacement velocity or acceleration of the particle being measured) and the frequency at which it occurs. The amplitude of vibration gives an indication of the machine's condition and the frequency at which it occurs identifying its probable source. Although vibration monitoring of machinery is a relatively new technique it is potentially one of the most cost-effective of the various nondestructive test techniques at present available.
