CONTAINERISATION ON THE NORTH ATLANTIC

This article summarises the results of a pilot study undertaken by Arthur D. Little Ltd. for the National Ports Council on the subject of United Kingdom container berth requirements. The purpose of this study was to explore various methods of estimating future berth requirements for unitised general cargo in the United Kingdom. As a specific example, the container traffic and berth requirements were analysed for the North Atlantic trade route. The pilot study included the following four major areas of investigation: 1. a comparative analysis of port-to-port costs for break- bulk and container services on the North Atlantic; 2. an analysis of container berth throughput capacity; 3. projections of containerisable trade volumes and container services on this trade route; and 4. a world-wide survey of container developments.
