HYDRAULIC FILL EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION ON PEAT

FROM THE FILLING OPERATIONS, TESTS AND ANALYSES, IT IS SHOWN THAT HYDRAULIC FILLING IS AN EXCELLENT METHOD FOR PLACING FILL ACROSS VERY SOFT GROUND, SUCH AS VIRGIN PEAT SWAMPS, WHERE CONVENTIONAL HEAVY EQUIPMENT SUCH AS TRUCKS AND BULLDOZERS COULD NOT OPERATE. THE HYDRAULIC PROCESS PLACES THIN LAYERS OF FILL WITH LONG FLAT SLOPES, WITHOUT HEAVY VEHICLES IN THE FILL, TO PROVIDE STABILITY IN THE EARLY CRITICAL STAGES OF FILLING. IN SPITE OF DIFFICULTIES DUE TO THE TEXTURE OF THE PEAT, ITS VARIABLE COMPOSITION AND GREAT COMPRESSIBILITIES AND OTHER FEATURES, GOOD AGREEMENT WAS OBTAINED BETWEEN TESTS, FIELD OBSERVATIONS AND SOIL MECHANICS ANALYSES BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER CONSTRUCTION. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ADEQUATE TIME FOR CONSOLIDATION BE ALLOWED TO REDUCE THE DANGER OF SLIDES DURING CONSTRUCTION AND TO MINIMIZE DETRIMENTAL POST-CONSTRUCTION DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENTS.
