DESIGN OF THE FIRST SOVIET 150,000-TON DEADWEIGHT TANKER
The steady growth of the extraction and export of petroleum in the Soviet Union and the increasing participation of the Maritime Fleet in world shipments, confronted shipbuilders with the task of creating a domestically made large-tonnage tanker with the maximum deadweight tonnage possible under operational conditions. The bolstering of the fleet with large-tonnage tankers will make it possible, in the shortest time and with minimum capital investment, to carry out the current national economic task of increasing the total tanker tonnage in order to meet the need for planned maritime oil shipments. Toward this end, studies are reported covering design research carried out in 1968-69, to determine the characteristics of a large-tonnage tanker that should provide a design basis.
