Characteristics of roller compacted concrete pavements in the United States

Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) pavements have been used in the United States since 1975, starting with the construction of a small test section at the Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Since then, over 11.4 sq m of RCC pavements have been placed in applications ranging from city streets to major industrial applications. In 2011, the authors conducted a survey of RCC pavement owners, contractors, consultants, and industry representatives to obtain a comprehensive database of RCC pavement applications in the United States. This paper synthesizes the survey results and examines key characteristics of RCC pavements in the U.S., including types of applications, geographical locations and distribution, age of the pavements, physical attributes such as size and thickness, and other attributes such as construction costs and cost savings over more conventional concrete and asphalt paving methods.
