THE USE OF STEEL IN HEAVY MARINE DIESEL ENGINES
The paper deals with the principle applications of steel to heavy marine oil engines and examines the design and production considerations which lead to particular forms of the material being adopted. The survey concentrates on the power transmitting and structural elements of two typical types of engine and shows how a rational evolutionary process has led to the selection of one or other of the specialized forms of steel for the majority of these components. The conclusion is reached that unless the price spectrum of existing materials is serously disturbed, steel is unlikely to be displaced from its present dominant position. A reference table of material properties is included.
