HOW NORTHERN EUROPE BREAKS THE ICE
A description is given of various methods of icebreaking that are employed by European vessels during their winter months of operation. These methods include the use of a "bubbler" system, the incorporation of icebreaking capabilities into some of the ships, and even the utilization of vibrations that are sent through the hull to break up the ice. These methods are fully described, as is the Wartsila model tank, which has an ice-making capability, and is extensively used in the development of icebreaking vessels.
