DYNAMIC POSITIONING STILL GAINING IMPORTANCE IN OFFSHORE OPERATIONS
In the offshore drilling industry, depth limitations have been experienced due to the inadequacy of conventional anchoring gear in very deep waters. This limitation is able to be overcome through the use of dynamic positioning systems, which require no anchoring devices, but rely on numerous thrusters to keep the vessel in position above the well hole. Descriptions are given of several types of dynamic positioning systems that are presently in use, and the problems associated with the use of dynamic positioning on pipelaying barges are also briefly described.
