DEEPWATER PORT CRISIS ON THE U.S. EAST COAST

The North Atlantic port area of the United States is presently experiencing the greatest economic pressure to use deep draft vessels in order to lower unit costs of transporting coal exports and imports of oil and iron ore. however, due to geophysical and political limitations, the use of these deep draft vessels is not contemplated in the immediate or forseeable future. This article reviews trends in ocean transportation with emphasis on economics and foreign port development, and analyzes restrictive factors, including geophysical restraints, and cost effectiveness. finally, it explores alternative solutions to handling deep draft vessels with a summary of conclusions and recommendations.
