ADVISABILITY OF BUILDING RIVER-SEA VESSELS TRANSPORTING TIMBER
O TSELESOOBRAZNOSTI POSTROYKI LESOVOZA SMESHANNOGO PLAVANIYA
Compares the economic characteristics of this type and general cargo ships of 5000-tons displacement. The river and sea-going vessel could take on timber for London at Maklakovo up the Yenisey, completing its load if necessary at Igarka and make the return trip in ballast or with a load of apatite from Murmansk to Maklakovo, during the 110-day arctic-summer navigation period; for most of the rest of the year the vessel could carry apatite from Murmansk to European ports. The comparison shows that the river-sea-going vessels operating the year round are far more economical and productive than the usual-construction general cargo ships of the same displacement. The design of the new type vessel is dealt with by A.K. Osmolovskiy, qv.
