V2I Implementation for Early Deployment of Cooperative Systems
Cooperative systems technology holds great promise for numerous new and improved applications in the mobility domain. The CVIS and Safespot European projects have demonstrated the viability of efficiency and safety applications. A new generation of projects – of which ecoMove is a prime example - explore new cooperative algorithms for carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction. In parallel with the exploration of new applications, standardization is progressing but not finalized. Cooperative systems technology holds such promise that the first initiatives for the deployment are running in parallel with research and standards development. One such initiative for early deployment is the FREILOT project that aims at fuel-savings for heavy goods vehicles. When the project was defined, it was not clear that cooperative technology could be used. During the project, the decision was made to implement as much of the evolving technology as was possible and useful. This decision was made possible by the developments within the Dutch SPITS project that created a deployable communication platform for cooperative applications. This paper describes the design choices made to create a vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) implementation that is used in a number of pilot projects and has the potential to be very cost-effective while supporting the evolving cooperative standards.
